In celebration of our 60th anniversary, we will feature NSMS alumni as part of our Alumni Spotlight series throughout 2020.
Which years were you at NSMS?
I was a student at NSMS from 2006-2019.
Who were your teachers?
Allison Shinnick (and Tracy Grandy, Elissa Miller-Kaye, Emily Lau, Aline Schmidt, and Ms. Julie (though I don’t remember her last name because I was really little)
What is a favorite NSMS memory?
Two of my favorite memories are when I played a small duet recital at a local nursing home with a friend that I composed as part of a project for my PEPS Class, and performing at the NSMS 50th anniversary celebration!
What are you doing now?
I’m currently studying Linguistics at the University of Rochester and working towards a music minor while taking piano at the Eastman School of Music.
What role does your education at NSMS play in your life today?
My experiences at NSMS helped to shape me as a person, as the school (and piano in general!) were a huge part of my life from before I started kindergarten all the way through my senior year of high school. I met so many wonderful people and made lots of memories, while learning to love music and performing along the way!
Vanessa, it's great to hear how music has been, and continues to be, and important part of your life!
