Adult Piano Study

45-minute or 60-minute weekly individual lesson

Repertoire class six times per year

NSMS welcomes adult students of all levels. After meeting with our Admissions Director to discuss your musical background, as well as your goals, you will be placed with a private teacher who will work with you to plan your individualized course of study.

All adult students are encouraged to attend repertoire classes, which provide an informal performance opportunity in a supportive setting. Listening to others play may lead to the discovery of new pieces you enjoy, and inspire you in your own practicing. Playing for others will help you build your confidence as a pianist. These classes foster a sense of community and camaraderie among our adult students.

Repertoire classes meet on Saturdays at 3:00PM, and are led by different NSMS faculty members.

"I resumed taking piano lessons, about a year ago, after not playing for many years. As a mature adult, I appreciated NSMS tailoring the lessons to fit my needs. In contrast to another music school that I considered, NSMS started with an assessment of my skills and goals before pairing me with a teacher. Both NSMS teachers I've worked with have been knowledgeable professionals and excellent instructors.

My son also took piano lessons (for many years) with different teachers in Princeton. As a result, I can knowledgeably recommend NSMS as one of the best!"

As an adult piano student at The New School for Music Study, I wholeheartedly support music in schools.  During my adult years I could never find the time to play a musical instrument,  but never gave up the desire to do so. Finally, in September 2010, I began piano lessons at NSMS continuing for 5 years, and after a 3-year hiatus,  I resumed lessons in January 2019 shortly after retiring from work.   I am so happy I did.  My exposure to music has been incredibly powerful and influential throughout my life.
